A few days before Hurricane Irene was about to hit, my college (which was supposed to be right in the path of the storm) was pushing everyone to GET OUT AND FIND SHELTER BEFORE THE STORM HITS AND KILLS US ALL, so I evacuated with my roommate to her house. The night we left was all rainy and foreboding and I was experiencing a fair amount of anxiety during the car ride over.
Then all the sudden we see this sign. And we both burst out laughing hysterically. I didn't have a camera at the time, but after the storm was over I made sure to get a hold of one so we could snap a picture on the way back.
Overall the evac was pretty unnecessary since Irene didn't really do much damage here, but hey, IM NOT COMPLAINING. Especially because /my/ family's house was even close to the water than my school. But now I have this picture as a souvenir of the event.
So the existence of this sign leads me to one of two conclusions: that the plot Mass Effect is actually all true and someone traveled to the future to see it and then returned to our time and named a road after Shepard just for the lolz, or there was a real Commander Shepard in past/present history who did something notable in regards to space travel (I mean come on, it's next to a NASA RESEARCH CENTER), in which case this whole situation is just really ironic.
Because the chances of that level of irony are pretty slim, I'mmmm gonna go with the former conclusion.
Brightened photo in PS CS4 a bit because it was kinda dark.
The funny thing about that is there actually was a Commander Shepard. Commander Alan Shepard to be exact. He was the first American in space, and the fifth man to walk on the moon.
On that note, some small part of me wonders how the first two men who walked on the moon would react if the main character for Mass Effect was Commander Armstrong or Commander Aldrin. If he was Commander Aldrin, well, punching Kalish Al Jihlani would be very fitting. Buzz Aldrin did punch a reporter in the face after all.
I watched an interview with Hudson a while back, and he said he named the character Shepard because they were looking at all of the original Mercury astronauts, and he decided that Shepard was the name that fit the best.

And wow, that is hilarious. I really wonder now why the writers named the character 'Shepard' and if they have any hidden meaning behind it.
